How to remove a password from a PDF you can open

Updated 2026-10-19

Banks, card issuers and payroll systems often send statements protected with a password such as your date of birth. Typing it every time gets tiresome, and many tools refuse to merge or compress locked files.

Two kinds of PDF password

  • Open password: needed to view the file at all.
  • Permissions password: the file opens, but printing, copying or editing is restricted.

Removing it

  • Open Unlock PDF and choose the file.
  • Enter the password you were given.
  • Download the unlocked copy, which opens without a prompt.

What is not possible

avalpdf does not guess or crack passwords. If you have forgotten the password, contact whoever sent the file — banks usually explain the format (for example, the first four letters of your name plus birth year).

Keep it safe

An unlocked statement is readable by anyone who gets the file. Store it in a private folder, or re-protect it with your own password using Protect PDF before sharing.
