Is it safe to use online PDF tools? Browser-only processing explained
Updated 2026-10-19
Most online PDF sites upload your file to their servers, process it there and send you a download link. For a recipe that is fine. For a passport scan or medical report, it is worth knowing the alternative.
Server processing
Your file travels across the internet, is stored on someone else's computer, at least temporarily, and is processed there. You are trusting their security, their deletion policy and everyone with access to those machines.
Browser processing
avalpdf sends the tool's code to your browser instead. Your device does the work and the file never leaves it. There is nothing to delete afterwards because nothing was stored elsewhere.
How to check for yourself
- Load a tool page, then switch off Wi-Fi or mobile data and run the tool — browser-based processing still has the file in your tab.
- Open your browser's developer tools, Network tab, and watch: no file upload request appears.
General safety habits
- Use Redact PDF, not a black rectangle, to hide sensitive text.
- Password-protect files before emailing them.
- Avoid pasting documents into sites that ask you to sign in for basic tasks.
